About Breda
The city's history dates back to the 11th century when it began as a medieval settlement. Breda received its city rights in 1252 and became an important strategic location due to its position on trade routes. The city played a significant role during the Eighty Years' War (1568-1648) and changed hands several times between Spanish and Dutch forces. The famous "Siege of Breda" in 1624-1625 was immortalized in Diego Velázquez's painting "The Surrender of Breda."

Among the city's most notable landmarks is the Grote Kerk (Great Church), a monumental Gothic church built between 1410 and 1547. The Breda Castle, currently serving as the Royal Military Academy, stands as another prominent historical building. The city center features the Begijnhof, a peaceful courtyard surrounded by historic houses where religious women lived in the Middle Ages, now recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Modern Breda is known for its strong economic position, particularly in the services sector and creative industries. The city hosts several educational institutions, including Breda University of Applied Sciences, which attracts students from around the world. The Chassé Theater, opened in 1995, serves as the main cultural venue for performing arts and cinema.
The city maintains extensive green spaces, with the Valkenberg Park being the most prominent public park in the center. Breda's strategic location, with excellent rail and road connections to major Dutch and Belgian cities, has contributed to its development as a regional hub. The city is also known for its annual events, including Breda Jazz Festival, one of the oldest jazz festivals in the Netherlands, and the RedHead Days, a unique gathering celebrating people with red hair.
