About Apeldoorn
Apeldoorn is a municipality and city in the eastern Netherlands, located in the province of Gelderland. It is the 11th largest city in the Netherlands with a population of approximately 141,000 residents (2023). The city serves as a significant economic and cultural hub in the region, situated amidst vast forested areas and heathlands of the Veluwe region.
The city's history dates back to the 8th century, though it remained a small village until the 19th century. The arrival of the railway in 1876 and the establishment of several paper factories marked the beginning of Apeldoorn's industrial development. A major factor in the city's growth was the construction of Het Loo Palace in the late 17th century, which served as a royal residence for members of the Dutch Royal Family until 1975. Today, the palace functions as a museum and is one of the city's primary tourist attractions, featuring magnificent baroque gardens and detailed historical exhibits.
Apeldoorn boasts several notable attractions, including Apenheul, a unique primate park where various species of apes and monkeys roam freely among visitors. The city is also home to CODA Museum, which showcases contemporary art, historical artifacts, and archives related to the region's paper industry heritage. Park Berg en Bos, a large urban park, offers extensive recreational facilities and houses the Apeldoorn's Berg & Bos Park observation tower, providing panoramic views of the surrounding area.
The city maintains a strong economic presence in the Netherlands, with a diverse economy centered on services, technology, and insurance. The headquarters of several major Dutch companies, including Centraal Beheer and the Tax and Customs Administration, are located in Apeldoorn. The city is well-connected to other major Dutch cities through its central railway station and proximity to major highways, including the A1 and A50.
Education plays a vital role in Apeldoorn's community, with the presence of Wittenborg University of Applied Sciences and numerous vocational training institutions. The city is also known for its commitment to sustainability and has implemented various environmental initiatives, including extensive cycling infrastructure and green energy projects.
