About Vondelpark
Vondelpark is Amsterdam's largest and most popular public urban park, located in the borough of Amsterdam-Zuid. Opened in 1865, it attracts approximately 10 million visitors annually. The park covers an area of 47 hectares (120 acres) and serves as a vital recreational space for both locals and tourists.
Originally named Nieuwe Park, it was renamed in 1867 after Dutch poet and playwright Joost van den Vondel. The park was designed by landscape architect Jan David Zocher in the English landscape style, featuring winding pathways, ornamental lakes, and carefully planned gardens. In 1996, Vondelpark was designated as a national monument.
The park contains several notable structures and facilities. The Vondelpark Open Air Theater hosts free concerts and performances during summer months. Pavilion Vondelpark, built in 1874, now houses the Vondel CS restaurant. The historic Hollandsche Manege, the oldest riding school in the Netherlands, is located at the park's edge. The park also features the Groot Melkhuis, a popular café and children's playground dating back to 1875.
Vondelpark features approximately 4,500 trees representing 150 different species, extensive rose gardens with more than 70 types of roses, and various water features including ponds and fountains. The park's infrastructure includes 6.8 miles of walking paths and a separate 2.5-mile cycling track. Multiple entrance gates provide access from different parts of the city, with the main entrance located at Stadhouderskade.
The park is maintained by the Amsterdam City Council and undergoes regular renovation to preserve its historical and ecological value. It serves multiple functions, including recreation, nature conservation, and cultural activities, making it a crucial green space in Amsterdam's urban landscape.
