About Amsterdam Jewish Quarter
Amsterdam's Jewish Quarter, historically known as Jodenbuurt, is a significant neighborhood in the eastern part of Amsterdam's city center. This area served as the heart of Jewish life in Amsterdam from the 16th century until World War II. During its peak in the early 1900s, the quarter was home to approximately 80,000 Jewish residents.
The district features several important historical landmarks. The most prominent among them is the Portuguese Synagogue, built in 1675. This magnificent Sephardic synagogue remains largely unchanged since its construction and still uses candlelight for evening services. Nearby stands the Jewish Historical Museum, housed in four restored Ashkenazi synagogues, which comprehensively documents Jewish life and history in the Netherlands.
During the Nazi occupation of Amsterdam in World War II, the Jewish Quarter was largely devastated, with many residents deported to concentration camps. Of Amsterdam's pre-war Jewish population of about 80,000, only around 5,000 survived the Holocaust. The National Holocaust Memorial and the Dutch Theater (Hollandsche Schouwburg), which served as a deportation center during the war, now stand as powerful reminders of this tragic period.
Today, the Jewish Quarter has been revitalized and serves as both a living neighborhood and an important cultural heritage site. The area includes the Jewish Cultural Quarter, which encompasses several museums and historical sites connected by a single ticket. The quarter also features the Gassan Diamonds factory, continuing Amsterdam's long tradition of diamond cutting and trading, an industry historically dominated by Jewish craftsmen.
