About Amsterdam Airport Schiphol

Amsterdam Airport Schiphol is the main international airport of the Netherlands, located 9 kilometers southwest of Amsterdam. It serves as the primary hub for KLM Royal Dutch Airlines and is one of the largest airports in Europe. The airport opened on September 16, 1916, as a military airbase and began civilian operations in December 1920.

The airport features six runways and one large terminal building with three departure halls. In 2019, before the COVID-19 pandemic, Schiphol handled 71.7 million passengers, making it the third-busiest airport in Europe by passenger traffic. The airport employs approximately 67,000 people and functions as a crucial economic engine for the Amsterdam metropolitan region.

Schiphol operates 24 hours a day and serves as a major transfer point for international flights. The airport's unique feature is its single-terminal concept, where all facilities are under one roof, connected by a series of corridors. This design allows for minimum connection times of 40 minutes for international flights.

The facility includes extensive shopping areas, restaurants, and various amenities, including a library, museum, and meditation center. The airport is well-connected to Amsterdam and other Dutch cities through direct train services, with a railway station located directly beneath the terminal building. In terms of cargo operations, Schiphol ranks as one of Europe's top freight hubs, handling 1.57 million tons of cargo in 2020.
