The city received its municipal rights in 1254 and has played an important role in Dutch history.
The city is internationally renowned for its traditional cheese market, which has been operating since 1593. The Alkmaar Cheese Market, held every Friday from April through September, attracts thousands of tourists who come to witness the traditional cheese-weighing and trading ceremonies. The characteristic cheese carriers, dressed in white uniforms and colored straw hats, perform their historic rituals at the Waagplein (Weighing Square).

Alkmaar's architectural heritage includes several notable structures. The Grote of Sint-Laurenskerk (Great Church of Saint Lawrence), built between 1470 and 1520, stands as a prime example of Gothic architecture and houses two historic organs. The Stedelijk Museum Alkmaar showcases the city's rich history and art collection, including works from the Golden Age of Dutch painting. The Beatles Museum, displaying memorabilia of the famous band, has become another popular attraction since its establishment.
During the Eighty Years' War, Alkmaar gained fame for successfully resisting Spanish forces in the Siege of Alkmaar in 1573. This victory marked a turning point in the Dutch struggle for independence, leading to the popular Dutch saying "Bij Alkmaar begint de victorie" (Victory begins at Alkmaar).
The city maintains a strong economic presence through various industries, including cheese production, tourism, and information technology.
