About Cozumel
Cozumel is an island in the Caribbean Sea off the east coast of Mexico's Yucatán Peninsula, part of the state of Quintana Roo. Located about 12 miles off Playa del Carmen, Cozumel stretches 30 miles long and 10 miles wide, making it the largest inhabited island in Mexico.
Known for its vibrant marine life and clear waters, Cozumel is a premier snorkeling and diving destination. The island is home to part of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef System, the second largest coral reef system in the world. Popular dive sites include Palancar Reef and Santa Rosa Wall, attracting divers from all over the world.
San Miguel de Cozumel, the island's main town, offers various amenities and serves as a center for tourism and commerce. The island is also home to archaeological sites such as San Gervasio, providing insight into its pre-Columbian history and importance as a Mayan pilgrimage center.
Cozumel's economy relies heavily on tourism, which is supported by an international airport and a busy cruise ship port. Efforts to balance development and conservation continue in an effort to preserve the island's natural resources while meeting growing tourist demand.
