About Marquesas Islands
The Marquesas Islands (Îles Marquises) form one of the most remote archipelagos in the world, located 1,371 km (852 miles) northeast of Tahiti. The group consists of 12 islands, of which six are inhabited, covering a total land area of 1,049 km2 (405 sq mi).
Unlike other French Polynesian islands, the Marquesas lack protective coral reefs and instead feature dramatic landscapes with high peaks, deep valleys, and towering cliffs. The islands are known for their unique cultural heritage, including distinctive tattoo art, traditional dance, and wood carving.
The archipelago's isolation has helped preserve its strong cultural identity and unique ecosystem, with numerous endemic species. The islands gained international recognition through the works of Paul Gauguin and Herman Melville, who found inspiration in their dramatic beauty and rich culture.
