About Punta Cana

Punta Cana is a resort town located in the easternmost region of the Dominican Republic, within the Punta Cana-Bávaro-Veron-Macao municipal district in La Altagracia Province. The area has developed from a remote coastal region into one of the Caribbean's most popular tourist destinations since the 1970s. Punta Cana is situated approximately 120 miles east of Santo Domingo, the nation's capital.

The region's economy is almost entirely based on tourism, with the area hosting over 40,000 hotel rooms spread across numerous all-inclusive resorts. The local beaches stretch for approximately 20 miles along the Caribbean Sea and Atlantic Ocean coastline, featuring characteristic white sand and turquoise waters. The average annual temperature remains around 80°F (26°C), with sunshine occurring approximately 300 days per year, making it an attractive year-round destination.

Punta Cana International Airport serves as the primary gateway to the region, handling more passengers than any other airport in the Caribbean. The facility opened in 1984 and currently processes millions of international travelers annually, with direct flights from North America, South America, and Europe.

Major attractions include Indigenous Eyes Ecological Park, a nature reserve containing twelve freshwater lagoons, and Hoyo Azul, a natural limestone sinkhole filled with crystal-clear water located within Scape Park. The area also features several championship golf courses designed by notable architects, contributing to its reputation as a golf destination. Saona Island and Catalina Island, both protected natural reserves, are accessible through organized day trips and showcase the region's biodiversity.
