Campgrounds and Camping Facilities

The Northwest Territories operates 26 territorial parks containing campgrounds. These facilities range from basic sites with picnic tables and fire pits to serviced locations with electrical hookups and shower facilities. Most campgrounds operate from mid-May to mid-September, with fees ranging from $15 to $30 per night depending on services.

Fred Henne Territorial Park, located near Yellowknife on Long Lake, offers 96 campsites including powered sites, making it the largest campground in the territory. The facility includes showers, a boat launch, swimming beach, and hiking trails. Prelude Lake Territorial Park, 32 kilometres east of Yellowknife, provides 39 sites along a scenic lake known for fishing.

Backcountry camping is permitted throughout most Crown lands without permits, following Leave No Trace principles. Campers must be self-sufficient and prepared for encounters with wildlife. Food must be stored in bear-proof containers or suspended at least four metres above ground and one metre from supporting structures.

Northern campgrounds typically lack cellular service and potable water treatment. Visitors should filter or boil water from natural sources and carry physical maps and compasses. Bug netting becomes essential during June and July when insect populations peak.
