National Parks of Northwest Territories

Northwest Territories contains four national parks managed by Parks Canada. Nahanni National Park Reserve, established in 1976, encompasses 30,000 square kilometres in the southwestern territory. The park features the South Nahanni River, Virginia Falls (twice the height of Niagara Falls), and hot springs. UNESCO designated it as one of the first World Heritage Sites in 1978.

Wood Buffalo National Park, straddling the Northwest Territories-Alberta border, covers 44,807 square kilometres, making it Canada's largest national park. The park protects the last remaining natural nesting area of the endangered whooping crane and contains the Peace-Athabasca Delta, one of the world's largest freshwater deltas.

Tuktut Nogait National Park, established in 1996, spans 18,181 square kilometres in the northern tundra region. The park name means "young caribou" in Inuvialuktun, referencing the calving grounds of the Bluenose-West caribou herd that migrates through the area. The park contains the Hornaday River canyon system and archaeological sites documenting 5,000 years of human presence.

Aulavik National Park, located on Banks Island in the Arctic Archipelago, covers 12,200 square kilometres. Established in 1992, the park protects Arctic wildlife including muskoxen, which exist there in the highest density in the world, along with the endangered Peary caribou.

Thaidene Nëné National Park Reserve, the territory's newest park established in 2019, protects 26,376 square kilometres of boreal forest, tundra, and freshwater ecosystems at the eastern end of Great Slave Lake.
