How to get to the Northwest Territories

Air travel provides the primary access method to Northwest Territories. Yellowknife Airport serves as the main hub with scheduled flights from Edmonton, Calgary, Vancouver, Ottawa, and Winnipeg operated by Air Canada, WestJet, and Canadian North. The airport handles approximately 350,000 passengers annually. Regional airlines including Northwestern Air and Simpson Air provide connections to smaller communities.

Road access is limited to the southern and western regions. Highway 3 enters from Alberta at Enterprise, connecting to Fort Smith and Yellowknife. Drivers entering from Alberta must allow 14-18 hours of driving from Edmonton to Yellowknife, covering approximately 1,500 kilometres. The Dempster Highway provides access from Yukon Territory, though this route requires high-clearance vehicles and experience with remote driving conditions.

No railway infrastructure exists within the territory. The nearest rail connection terminates at Hay River in the 1960s was later abandoned. Marine access remains seasonal, with commercial barge services operating on Great Slave Lake and the Mackenzie River system from June to September, primarily serving freight transportation.
