About Pembina Valley Region
The Pembina Valley Region occupies south-central Manitoba, centered on the Pembina River valley and surrounding uplands. This region encompasses some of Manitoba's most productive agricultural land and fastest-growing communities. The cities of Morden and Winkler serve as regional centers, forming an economic partnership that supports a diverse economy.
Geographic Features
The Pembina River carved a distinct valley through the prairie landscape, creating the region's defining topographic feature. The valley provides shelter, water resources, and scenic qualities that distinguish the area from surrounding flat prairie. The Pembina River flows eastward, eventually joining the Red River. Rich soils developed from glacial deposits support intensive agriculture throughout the region.
The region experiences a continental climate tempered slightly by valley features. The area receives adequate precipitation for crop production and benefits from relatively warm summer temperatures. Elevation changes within the valley create microclimates suitable for specialized agriculture.
Urban Centers
Winkler, with a population exceeding 13,000, represents the region's largest city. The community hosts significant manufacturing facilities, including Triple E Recreational Vehicles and various agricultural equipment manufacturers. Retail and service sectors serve a wide rural area extending to the United States border.
Morden, immediately adjacent to Winkler with approximately 9,000 residents, complements its neighbor with additional services and the Morden Research and Development Centre, operated by Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada. The facility conducts research on crop development and agricultural practices. The two cities increasingly function as a single economic unit despite maintaining separate municipal governments.
Agriculture and Economy
The Pembina Valley supports diverse agricultural production. Grain farming, particularly wheat and canola, covers extensive areas. Specialty crops including sunflowers, potatoes, and vegetables thrive in suitable locations. Livestock operations, especially hog and poultry production, operate throughout the region. Food processing facilities add value to agricultural products.
Highway 3 connects the region eastward to Winnipeg and westward toward Brandon, while Highway 32 and Highway 23 provide north-south access. The region's proximity to Winnipeg and the Canada-United States border enhances its economic advantages.
