Cities and Towns in Manitoba

Manitoba, a province in central Canada, contains 10 cities, 39 towns, 37 villages, and numerous other urban municipalities. The province's urban settlements are primarily concentrated in the southern regions, with Winnipeg serving as the largest and capital city.

Major Cities

Winnipeg, located at the confluence of the Red and Assiniboine rivers, is Manitoba's capital and largest city with a population exceeding 750,000 in its metropolitan area. The city serves as the province's economic, cultural, and governmental center. Brandon, situated in southwestern Manitoba, is the second-largest city with approximately 50,000 residents and functions as a major agricultural and transportation hub for the western portion of the province.

Other significant cities include Steinbach, Thompson, Portage la Prairie, Winkler, and Selkirk. Thompson, located in northern Manitoba, developed as a mining city following the discovery of nickel deposits in the 1950s. Steinbach, the third-largest city, is recognized as one of Canada's fastest-growing communities.

Towns and Regional Distribution

Manitoba's towns vary considerably in population and economic base. The Pembina Valley region contains several prosperous agricultural towns including Morden and Altona. The Interlake region features towns such as Gimli, known for its Icelandic heritage, and Stonewall. Northern towns like Flin Flon, The Pas, and Churchill serve resource extraction industries and transportation routes. Churchill specifically functions as Canada's only Arctic seaport and is internationally recognized for polar bear observation tourism.

Many Manitoba towns originated as railway stops during the late 19th and early 20th centuries agricultural expansion. The province's urban municipalities operate under various governance structures defined by The Municipal Act, with classification depending on population thresholds and incorporation status.
