About Parkland Region
The Parkland Region stretches across west-central Manitoba, representing a transition zone between prairie grasslands to the south and boreal forest to the north. This region takes its name from the mixed landscape of aspen parkland, characterized by groves of aspen trees interspersed with grassland openings. The area encompasses Riding Mountain National Park and extends from the Saskatchewan border eastward toward Lake Manitoba.
Landscape Characteristics
The Manitoba Escarpment rises prominently through the region, with Riding Mountain representing the most dramatic elevation. This plateau stands approximately 450 meters above the surrounding prairie. The elevated terrain supports a different ecosystem than the adjacent lowlands, with denser forest cover and cooler temperatures. Rolling hills, numerous lakes, and fertile soils characterize the region.
Riding Mountain National Park protects a significant wilderness area encompassing 2,973 square kilometers. The park contains diverse habitats supporting elk, moose, black bears, and over 260 bird species. Clear Lake, located within the park, attracts visitors to the adjacent Wasagaming townsite.
Communities and Economic Activities
Dauphin serves as the region's primary center, with a population exceeding 8,000 residents. The city functions as a government service hub and agricultural center. Swan River, located in the northwestern portion, represents another significant community. Russell, Roblin, and Minnedosa provide services to surrounding rural areas.
Mixed farming dominates the agricultural sector, combining grain crops with livestock production. Cattle operations utilize both cultivated lands and natural pastures. The region produces wheat, canola, barley, and oats under generally favorable growing conditions. Tourism contributes to the local economy, particularly around Riding Mountain National Park, Clear Lake, and Duck Mountain Provincial Park.
Highway 10 and Highway 5 serve as major north-south routes, while Highway 16 (Yellowhead Highway) crosses east-west. The region's relatively developed road network supports agricultural activities and connects communities to larger centers.
