About Interlake Region

The Interlake Region occupies the area between Lake Manitoba and Lake Winnipeg in south-central Manitoba. This distinct geographic zone extends approximately 200 kilometers north from Winnipeg's northern edge, characterized by limestone bedrock near the surface, numerous wetlands, and mixed agricultural lands. The region's name derives from its position between the two large lakes.

Physical Geography

Lake Agassiz's ancient shorelines created the region's topography, featuring limestone pavement, beach ridges, and poorly drained lowlands. The Interlake contains extensive areas of wetlands and surface water. Limestone bedrock lies close to the surface across much of the region, limiting agricultural potential in some areas but creating unique ecosystems.

The region experiences significant influences from the adjacent lakes. Lake Winnipeg, one of the world's largest freshwater lakes, borders the east, while Lake Manitoba defines the western boundary. These water bodies moderate temperatures and influence precipitation patterns.

Communities and Economy

Selkirk, with approximately 10,000 residents, serves as the region's largest center and main service hub. The city hosts a major psychiatric hospital, marine industries serving Lake Winnipeg's commercial fishery, and regional government services. Gimli, located on Lake Winnipeg's western shore, maintains a significant Icelandic heritage and supports fishing and tourism industries.

Agriculture in the Interlake focuses on livestock production, particularly cattle grazing, due to marginal soil conditions in many areas. Better-drained locations support grain farming. Commercial fishing on Lake Winnipeg provides important employment, despite facing challenges from declining fish stocks and market conditions.

Highway 6 serves as the primary north-south route through the region's center, connecting Winnipeg to northern Manitoba. Highway 7 and Highway 8 provide east-west connections. The region's rural character persists, with no cities and relatively sparse population distribution outside the main centers.
