About Eastman Region
The Eastman Region (Eastern Manitoba) comprises southeastern Manitoba, extending from Winnipeg eastward to the Ontario border and from the United States border northward to the 53rd parallel. The region encompasses the Canadian Shield's western edge, featuring rocky terrain, numerous lakes, and extensive forest cover. Steinbach serves as the region's largest city and primary commercial center.
Geography and Natural Features
The landscape transitions from agricultural prairie in the west to Precambrian Shield in the east. The Winnipeg River flows through the region, descending from the Shield through several hydroelectric generating stations before joining the Red River. Whiteshell Provincial Park protects wilderness areas and provides recreational opportunities.
The region contains over 200 lakes, including Lac du Bonnet, Nopiming, and numerous smaller water bodies. The eastern portions exhibit rugged topography with exposed bedrock, while western areas feature gentler terrain suitable for agriculture.
Population and Economy
Steinbach, with a population exceeding 17,000, anchors the region's economy with manufacturing, retail, and services. The city hosts several major employers in manufacturing and distribution. Agriculture remains important in western portions, particularly in the areas around Steinbach, Beausejour, and Vita.
Forestry and mining contribute to the eastern economy. Manitoba Hydro operates several generating stations along the Winnipeg River. Tourism supports communities near Whiteshell Provincial Park, with visitors drawn to boating, fishing, and cottage activities. The region also serves as a gateway to Kenora and northwestern Ontario.
Highway 1 (Trans-Canada Highway) provides the primary east-west corridor, while Highway 59 and Highway 12 serve north-south routes. The road network becomes less dense in the Shield areas, where lakes and rugged terrain limit development.
