About Hawaii
Hawaii is the most recent state to join the United States, becoming the 50th state on August 21, 1959. Located in the Pacific Ocean about 2,000 miles (3,200 km) southwest of the continental United States, Hawaii is the only U.S. state situated outside North America, the only island state, and the only state in the tropics.
Hawaii encompasses nearly the entire Hawaiian archipelago, comprising 137 volcanic islands spanning 1,500 miles (2,450 km). The state's total land area measures 10,931 square miles (28,311 km²), ranking it 43rd among U.S. states in size. Hawaii does not border any other countries or U.S. states due to its isolated position in the Pacific Ocean.

As of the 2024, Hawaii has a population of approximately 1.45 million residents. The state capital and largest city is Honolulu, located on the island of Oahu. Other major cities include Hilo and Kailua-Kona on the Big Island (Hawaii Island), Kahului on Maui, and Lihue on Kauai.
Hawaii's economy relies primarily on tourism, defense, and agriculture. Tourism constitutes the largest sector, contributing approximately 21% to the state's economy. The defense industry forms the second-largest economic sector, with numerous military installations including Pearl Harbor Naval Base, Schofield Barracks, and Hickam Air Force Base. Agricultural products include pineapples, macadamia nuts, coffee, and tropical flowers.
The state maintains a diverse demographic composition, with no single ethnic group forming a majority. Native Hawaiians and other Pacific Islanders comprise approximately 10% of the population, while people of Asian descent represent the largest segment at about 38%. The remainder includes those of European ancestry, mixed heritage, and other backgrounds.

Tourism attracts over 10 million visitors annually. Major attractions include Waikiki Beach and Diamond Head on Oahu, Hawaii Volcanoes National Park on the Big Island, Haleakalā National Park on Maui, and the Na Pali Coast on Kauai. Pearl Harbor, site of the December 7, 1941 attack that precipitated U.S. entry into World War II, draws significant numbers of visitors to its historical memorials.

Hawaii's unique geography creates diverse climate zones ranging from tropical rainforests to arid regions to alpine conditions at higher elevations. The islands experience relatively consistent temperatures year-round, with average highs between 78-85°F (26-29°C) and lows between 65-75°F (18-24°C). The windward (northeastern) sides of the islands typically receive more rainfall than the leeward sides.
The state operates under a constitutional government with a governor as chief executive. Hawaii sends two senators and two representatives to the U.S. Congress.
