About North Wildwood
North Wildwood is a city located in Cape May County, New Jersey, United States. Situated on the barrier island of Five Mile Beach, it is part of the Wildwood, a group of shore communities that includes Wildwood, Wildwood Crest, and West Wildwood. As of the 2023, the city's population was 3,585.
The area was originally developed in the late 1800s as a resort destination. The city was incorporated as a borough on June 2, 1885, from portions of Anglesea, which was then a part of Middle Township. The borough was reincorporated on March 31, 1917, and again on April 30, 1917. North Wildwood was incorporated as a city on April 30, 1917, replacing the borough of North Wildwood. The city gets its name from the wild flowers that once grew abundantly in the area.
Among the notable attractions in North Wildwood are the Hereford Inlet Lighthouse, built in 1874 and still operational today, and the Seawall, which stretches along the oceanfront and provides protection from coastal storms. The city is also home to the Lou Booth Amphitheater, where free concerts and events are held throughout the summer season. The Margaret Mace Elementary School, serving students from pre-kindergarten through eighth grade, is the city's only public school.
North Wildwood's economy is primarily driven by tourism, with its population swelling significantly during the summer months. The city features numerous hotels, restaurants, and entertainment venues along its famous boardwalk. The Entertainment District on Olde New Jersey Avenue has become a popular destination for nightlife and dining. The city maintains several public beaches that are guarded during the summer season and offers various recreational activities including fishing, boating, and water sports.
The municipality has received recognition for its commitment to beach maintenance and public safety, consistently earning recognition as one of New Jersey's cleanest beaches. North Wildwood's beach patrol, established in 1912, is one of the oldest professional lifeguard services in the United States.
