About West Wildwood

West Wildwood is a borough located in Cape May County, New Jersey, United States. According to the 2020 United States Census, the borough's population was 555, representing a decrease of 8.6% from the 2010 census count of 603 inhabitants.

The borough was incorporated in 1920 from portions of Middle Township, based on the results of a referendum held on April 20, 1920. It is situated on a small island connected to Wildwood by two bridges across the Grassy Sound Channel. The total area of West Wildwood is 0.31 square miles (0.80 km²), of which 0.24 square miles (0.62 km²) is land and 0.07 square miles (0.18 km²) is water, representing 22.58% of the total area.

West Wildwood operates under the Walsh Act form of New Jersey municipal government. The governing body consists of three commissioners, who are elected at-large in nonpartisan elections to serve four-year concurrent terms of office. The mayor is selected by the commissioners from among their members.

Notable landmarks in West Wildwood include the West Wildwood Marina, which provides access to fishing and boating activities in the surrounding waters. The borough is also home to the West Wildwood Volunteer Fire Company, established in 1924, which serves the community's emergency response needs. The Veterans Memorial Park on Glenwood Avenue serves as a tribute to local veterans and provides recreational space for residents.

The borough is part of the Ocean Drive region of Cape May County and is protected from the Atlantic Ocean by the barrier islands of Wildwood and North Wildwood. Despite its small size, West Wildwood maintains its own police department and public works services. The community is primarily residential, featuring a mix of year-round residents and summer vacation homes. Students in public school attend schools in the Wildwood Public School District for grades K-12 through a sending/receiving relationship.
