About Honolulu
Honolulu is the capital and largest city of the U.S. state of Hawaii. Located on the island of Oahu, it serves as the principal port of the Hawaiian Islands and is the westernmost major U.S. city. According to the 2020 census, Honolulu has a population of approximately 350,964 in the city proper, while the metropolitan area has over 1 million residents.

The city extends from Pearl Harbor to Makapuu Point, encompassing the world-famous Waikiki Beach. Honolulu experiences a tropical hot semi-arid climate with little seasonal temperature variation. Annual rainfall averages around 17 inches (430 mm), though this varies significantly due to the rain shadow effect of the Koʻolau Mountains. Temperatures typically range from 65-90°F (18-32°C) throughout the year.

The area now constituting Honolulu has been inhabited since at least the 11th century by Polynesian settlers. Captain William Brown, a British merchant, was the first recorded foreigner to sail into Honolulu Harbor in 1794. King Kamehameha I conquered Oahu in 1795, and in 1809, his court relocated from Waikiki to what is now Downtown Honolulu. The city was incorporated in 1907, and Hawaii became the 50th U.S. state in 1959.
Honolulu serves as Hawaii's economic center, with tourism being the primary industry. Military defense is another significant economic driver, with several major bases including Pearl Harbor Naval Base, site of the December 7, 1941 attack that drew the United States into World War II. Other key sectors include international business, research and development, and manufacturing.
As a major cultural hub in the Pacific, Honolulu features numerous museums and cultural institutions. The Bishop Museum houses the world's largest collection of Polynesian cultural artifacts, while the Honolulu Museum of Art contains an extensive collection of Asian and Western art.
Notable attractions include Waikiki Beach, a world-renowned stretch of white sand; Diamond Head, an extinct volcanic crater offering panoramic views; Iolani Palace, the only royal palace on U.S. soil; and the USS Arizona Memorial at Pearl Harbor, which commemorates the 1,177 crewmen who lost their lives during the 1941 Japanese attack. Other popular destinations include the Ala Moana Center, one of the largest open-air shopping centers in the world, and the historic Chinatown district.
