About Honolulu Airport
Daniel K. Inouye International Airport (HNL), commonly known as Honolulu Airport, is the principal aviation gateway of Hawaii and the largest airport in the Hawaiian Islands. Located in Honolulu, Hawaii, approximately 3 miles northwest of the city's central business district, it covers 4,220 acres of land and serves as a major hub for Hawaiian Airlines and Southwest Airlines. The airport was originally named Honolulu International Airport until 2017 when it was renamed to honor U.S. Senator Daniel K. Inouye.
The airport features four active runways, including the Reef Runway (8R/26L), which was the world's first major runway built entirely offshore on an underwater fringing coral reef when it opened in 1977. In terms of passenger traffic, HNL handles over 20 million passengers annually, making it one of the busiest airports in the United States. The airport serves as a critical connection point between North America, Asia, and the South Pacific, offering direct flights to numerous international destinations including Japan, South Korea, Australia, and various Pacific Island nations.
The terminal complex consists of three main terminal buildings connected by an automated wiki wiki shuttle system. Terminal 1 primarily serves Hawaiian Airlines, Terminal 2 accommodates most other domestic and international carriers, and Terminal 3 is dedicated to interisland operations. The airport also maintains extensive cargo and maintenance facilities, including the largest aircraft maintenance facility in the Pacific.
HNL plays a significant role in both civilian and military aviation. The airport shares runways with adjacent Hickam Air Force Base, now part of Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam. This dual-use arrangement dates back to World War II and continues to serve both civilian and military needs. The airport also houses the Aviation Museum of the Pacific, which showcases Hawaii's rich aviation history through various exhibits and restored aircraft.
Economic impact studies have shown that the airport generates over $15 billion in economic activity for the state of Hawaii and provides employment for more than 23,000 people. Recent modernization efforts include sustainability initiatives, with the airport implementing solar power systems and other energy-efficient technologies to reduce its environmental footprint.
