About Honolulu Zoo
The Honolulu Zoo is located in the heart of Waikiki, Honolulu, Hawaii, spanning 42 acres of tropical land that was once part of King Kalakaua's private grounds. Established in 1877, it is the only zoo in the United States originating from a king's collection of exotic birds and animals. The zoo officially opened to the public in 1947 and is now owned by the City and County of Honolulu.
The facility houses over 900 animals representing more than 170 species from tropical regions worldwide. Notable exhibits include the African Savanna, where visitors can observe elephants, lions, zebras, giraffes, and various African birds. The Pacific Islands section showcases native and endemic species, including the endangered Nene (Hawaiian goose) and various tropical birds. The zoo's reptile collection features numerous species of snakes, lizards, and tortoises, while the primate collection includes orangutans, chimpanzees, and various monkey species.
Educational programs at Honolulu Zoo include guided tours, summer camps, and special events designed to promote wildlife conservation awareness. The zoo operates a successful breeding program for endangered species and participates in various international conservation efforts. The facility also features the Keiki Zoo, a children's area where young visitors can interact with domesticated animals, and the Tropical Rainforest exhibit, which recreates a native Hawaiian forest environment.
The zoo grounds include several notable features beyond animal exhibits. The Zoo Fence Gallery, located along Monsarrat Avenue, displays local artists' work every weekend. The property also contains significant botanical collections, with more than 40 species of native and exotic plants. Visitors can find the Kapahulu Entry Complex, which houses the gift shop, administration offices, and a cafe. The zoo operates daily from 9:00 AM to 4:30 PM, except for Christmas Day, and offers both regular admission and annual membership options.
