About Maldonado
Maldonado is a city in southeastern Uruguay, serving as the capital of Maldonado Department. Located approximately 130 kilometers east of Montevideo, it has a population of around 90,000 inhabitants, making it the sixth-largest city in Uruguay.
Founded in 1755 by Don Francisco de Maldonado, the city developed as an important regional center. Today, it forms part of a larger metropolitan area together with the famous resort city of Punta del Este, which lies just 10 kilometers to the south. The city's economy is primarily driven by tourism services, commerce, and construction related to the nearby coastal developments.
Notable landmarks include the Cathedral of Saint Ferdinand (Catedral de San Fernando), built in 1895, and the Torre del Vigía, a historic watchtower constructed in 1800. The Francisco Mazzoni Regional Museum houses important collections related to the region's history and culture.
Maldonado serves as a crucial support city for the tourist industry of Punta del Este, providing essential services and housing for many workers who serve the resort area. The city is connected to the rest of Uruguay via Route 39 and benefits from proximity to the Capitán de Corbeta Carlos A. Curbelo International Airport, which serves the entire region.
