About Colonia del Sacramento
Colonia del Sacramento is a city in southwestern Uruguay, situated on the Río de la Plata. Founded in 1680 by Portuguese settlers, it is one of the oldest cities in Uruguay and is renowned for its historic quarter, which was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1995.
The city's population is approximately 27,000 inhabitants. Its strategic location made it a significant port and a point of contention between Portuguese and Spanish colonizers throughout the 18th century. The city changed hands several times before finally becoming part of Uruguay in 1828.
The main attractions include the Historic Quarter (Barrio Histórico), featuring cobblestone streets and colonial-era buildings. Notable landmarks include the Portón de Campo (the city gate and wooden drawbridge), the Lighthouse and Convent of San Francisco built in 1857, and the Basilica of the Holy Sacrament, constructed in 1808. The Portuguese Museum and Municipal Museum showcase the city's rich history through artifacts and exhibitions.
Colonia del Sacramento serves as a popular tourist destination, particularly for visitors from Buenos Aires, Argentina, which is just a one-hour ferry ride across the Río de la Plata. The city's economy is primarily based on tourism, services, and light industry.
