About Taipei

Taipei is the capital and largest city of Taiwan (Republic of China). Located in the northern part of the island, it serves as the political, economic, educational, and cultural center of Taiwan. The city proper has a population of approximately 2.5 million people, while the greater metropolitan area houses around 9 million inhabitants.

Founded in the 18th century, Taipei became the capital of Taiwan in 1949 when the Kuomintang government retreated from mainland China. The city experienced rapid development during the latter half of the 20th century, transforming into a modern global city.

The city's most iconic landmark is Taipei 101, which was the world's tallest building from 2004 to 2010. Standing at 509.2 meters (1,671 feet), this architectural marvel combines modern design with traditional Chinese elements. Other significant attractions include the National Palace Museum, housing one of the world's largest collections of Chinese artifacts and artwork, the historic Longshan Temple, and the Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall.

Taipei's economy is primarily service-based, with particular strength in technology, finance, and tourism sectors. The city is home to numerous night markets, including the famous Shilin Night Market, where visitors can experience local cuisine and culture. The comprehensive Mass Rapid Transit system, known as the Taipei Metro, serves as the backbone of public transportation, connecting major districts and suburbs.

The city enjoys a subtropical climate with hot, humid summers and mild winters. Annual rainfall is significant, with the monsoon season typically occurring between June and July. Despite its urban density, Taipei maintains numerous parks and green spaces, with Yangmingshan National Park located on its northern edge.
