About Gustavia

Gustavia is the capital and main town of the Caribbean island of Saint Barthélemy (St. Barts), an overseas collectivity of France. The city was named after King Gustav III of Sweden, during the period when the island was a Swedish colony (1785-1878).

Located on the western side of the island, Gustavia is built around a horseshoe-shaped harbor and serves as the island's main port. The town has a population of approximately 9,800 people and is a significant tourist destination in the Caribbean. The harbor can accommodate yachts and small cruise ships, making it a popular stop for luxury vessels.

Notable landmarks include the Wall House Museum, which showcases the island's history, and the Swedish Clock Tower, a restored historical monument from the Swedish colonial period. The Fort Gustav, built in the late 18th century, offers panoramic views of the harbor and surrounding areas. The Anglican Church, constructed in 1855, stands as one of the oldest buildings in town.

The town is known for its duty-free luxury shopping, featuring high-end boutiques and designer stores along the main street, Rue de la République. Gustavia's architecture reflects both its Swedish heritage and French colonial influence, with traditional wooden houses and stone buildings featuring red roofs, which are characteristic of Swedish design.
