About Colombo
The city's history dates back to ancient times when it was a significant trading port for Arab merchants. The Portuguese arrived in the 16th century, followed by the Dutch and British, who each contributed to the city's development. The name "Colombo" is believed to have been derived from the classical Sinhalese name "Kolon thota", meaning "port on the Kelani River."
Modern Colombo features a mix of colonial architecture and contemporary developments. Notable landmarks include the Galle Face Green, a sprawling urban park along the coastline, the historic Gangaramaya Temple, and the Independence Memorial Hall. The National Museum of Colombo, established in 1877, houses important cultural artifacts and historical collections.
The city's economy is primarily driven by its port, which handles most of Sri Lanka's foreign trade. The Port of Colombo ranks among the busiest ports in South Asia and is a crucial maritime hub in the Indian Ocean region. The city also hosts the Colombo Stock Exchange and numerous corporate headquarters.
Colombo experiences a tropical monsoon climate with relatively consistent temperatures throughout the year, averaging between 77°F and 86°F (25°C to 30°C). The city is divided into 15 postal districts and serves as the administrative capital of the Western Province.
