About Victoria
Victoria is the capital city and principal port of the Seychelles, located on the northeastern coast of Mahé island. With a population of approximately 26,450 (2021), it is the smallest capital city in Africa and the only major port in the Seychelles archipelago.
The city serves as the economic hub of the Seychelles, housing the main fishing port and the primary commercial center. Victoria's port handles the majority of the country's imports and exports, including crucial seafood products and tourism-related goods. The city is also home to the Seychelles International Airport, which is situated approximately 11 kilometers south of the city center.
Notable landmarks include the Victoria Clock Tower, erected in 1903, which is a miniature replica of London's Vauxhall Clock Tower and serves as a prominent symbol of the city. The Sir Selwyn Selwyn-Clarke Market, built in 1840 and renovated in 1999, remains the primary location for fresh produce, fish, and local spices trading. The National Museum of History and the Natural History Museum offer insights into the country's cultural heritage and biodiversity.
The city features a blend of colonial and modern architecture, with the Cathedral of Our Lady of Immaculate Conception being one of its most significant religious buildings. The nearby Botanical Gardens, established in 1901, houses various endemic species, including the famous Coco de Mer palm and giant Aldabra tortoises.
Victoria experiences a tropical rainforest climate with consistently warm temperatures throughout the year and significant rainfall, particularly during the northwest monsoon season from December to March.
