About Belgrade

Belgrade is the capital and largest city of Serbia, situated at the confluence of the Sava and Danube rivers. With a population of approximately 1.7 million people, it stands as one of the largest cities in Southeastern Europe. The city's history spans over 7,000 years, making it one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in Europe.

The city serves as Serbia's primary economic hub, hosting numerous national and international companies. Belgrade generates over 40% of Serbia's GDP and is home to the country's largest stock exchange. The city's strategic location at the crossroads of Eastern and Western Europe has historically made it a significant trading and cultural center.

Among Belgrade's most notable landmarks is the Belgrade Fortress, an ancient fortress situated in the city's Kalemegdan Park. The fortress, which dates back to the 3rd century BC, has been destroyed and rebuilt numerous times throughout history. The city's other significant attractions include Saint Sava Temple, one of the largest Orthodox churches in the world, and the vibrant Skadarlija district, known for its traditional restaurants and bohemian atmosphere.

Belgrade's public transportation system consists of buses, trams, trolleybuses, and a commuter rail network. The city is also served by Nikola Tesla Airport, the largest and busiest airport in Serbia. The climate is humid subtropical, with four distinct seasons. Summers are warm with temperatures averaging around 23°C (73°F), while winters are relatively cold with temperatures around 2°C (35°F).

The city is an important educational center, home to the University of Belgrade, founded in 1808, which is Serbia's largest and oldest institution of higher learning. Belgrade also hosts numerous annual cultural events, including FEST (Belgrade Film Festival), BITEF (Belgrade Theatre Festival), and the Belgrade Beer Festival.
