About Jeddah

Jeddah is the second-largest city in Saudi Arabia and the largest seaport on the Red Sea, with a population of approximately 5 million people. It serves as the principal gateway to Mecca, Islam's holiest city, making it a significant diplomatic and economic center.

Founded as a fishing settlement over 2,500 years ago, Jeddah has been a major port for Indian Ocean trade routes, facilitating commerce between Europe and the Orient. The city gained prominence as the primary entry point for Muslim pilgrims traveling to Mecca and Medina for the Hajj.

The historic district of Jeddah, known as Al-Balad, was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2014. This area features traditional coral stone buildings with distinctive wooden latticed balconies (mashrabiya) and intricate architectural details dating back to the 7th century.

Modern Jeddah is characterized by contemporary architecture, including the King Fahd's Fountain, which is the world's tallest water fountain, shooting water up to 853 feet (260 meters) high. The city's waterfront features the Jeddah Corniche, a 30-kilometer coastal resort area with recreational facilities, restaurants, and the famous open-air museum displaying sculptures by international artists.

The city's economy is diverse, encompassing trade, tourism, and manufacturing. King Abdulaziz International Airport serves as a major hub for both religious and commercial travel. Jeddah's climate is characterized by year-round hot weather, with summer temperatures regularly exceeding 104°F (40°C). Despite its desert location, the city experiences occasional rainfall and high humidity due to its coastal position. The Jeddah Tower, currently under construction, is planned to become the world's first 1-kilometer-high building upon completion.
