About Upolu
Upolu Island is the second largest island in Samoa, situated in the South Pacific Ocean. With an area of 1,125 square kilometers (434 square miles), it is home to approximately three-quarters of Samoa's population and houses the nation's capital, Apia.
The island was formed by a massive basaltic shield volcano, which rises from the seafloor of the western Pacific. The last volcanic activity on Upolu occurred in the Pleistocene epoch. The island's highest point is Mount Fito, reaching 1,100 meters (3,608 feet) above sea level.
Upolu features several significant landmarks and natural attractions. To Sua Ocean Trench, a 30-meter deep natural swimming hole connected to the ocean through a series of underground tunnels, is one of the most popular tourist destinations. The historic Robert Louis Stevenson Museum, formerly the home of the famous Scottish author, sits on the slopes of Mount Vaea. Papaseea Sliding Rocks, a natural water slide formed by smooth volcanic rocks, attracts visitors seeking unique experiences.
The island's economy primarily relies on agriculture, tourism, and remittances from Samoans working abroad. The main agricultural products include coconuts, bananas, taro, and cocoa. Apia's deep-water port serves as the country's primary maritime gateway for international trade.
Traditional Samoan culture remains strong on Upolu, with many villages maintaining the fa'amatai system, a traditional hierarchical organization of chiefs. The island also hosts numerous traditional ceremonies and cultural events throughout the year. Transportation infrastructure includes Faleolo International Airport, located 40 kilometers west of Apia, which serves as the main gateway for international visitors.
