About Savaiʻi

Savai'i Island is the largest island in the Samoan archipelago and the sixth largest in Polynesia. Located in the South Pacific Ocean, it is part of the Independent State of Samoa (formerly known as Western Samoa). The island covers an area of approximately 654 square miles (1,694 square kilometers).

The island was formed by volcanic activity, and its highest point is Mount Silisili, reaching 6,095 feet (1,858 meters) above sea level. Savai'i is characterized by its rugged volcanic terrain, lush rainforests, and pristine beaches. The island's climate is tropical, with high humidity and temperatures averaging between 75-85°F (24-29°C) throughout the year.

Several notable natural attractions draw visitors to Savai'i. The Alofaaga Blowholes on the southwestern coast demonstrate impressive natural water displays, shooting ocean spray up to 100 feet into the air through ancient lava tubes. The Sale'aula Lava Fields, created by the Mt. Matavanu eruptions between 1905 and 1911, showcase dramatic volcanic landscapes. The Pulemelei Mound, the largest ancient structure in Polynesia, stands as a significant archaeological site dating back to 1100-1400 AD.

The island's population is approximately 45,000 people, with most inhabitants living in traditional villages along the coastal areas. The main town and administrative center is Salelologa, located on the eastern end of the island. Traditional Samoan culture remains strong on Savai'i, with the fa'amatai (chiefly system) still governing village life.

Transportation to and around Savai'i is primarily via ferry service from Upolu Island to Salelologa wharf, and a single main road circles the island. The local economy is based on agriculture, fishing, and growing tourism, with taro, coconuts, and bananas being major crops.
