About Apia

Apia is the capital and largest city of Samoa, located on the northern coast of Upolu island in the South Pacific Ocean. With a population of approximately 36,000 people, it serves as the country's main commercial and political center.

Founded in the 1850s, the city became the official capital during the German colonial period in the early 20th century. The name "Apia" originated from a village that previously existed in the area. Today, it functions as Samoa's primary port, handling most of the nation's imports and exports. The city experiences a tropical rainforest climate with consistent temperatures throughout the year, averaging between 75-85°F (24-29°C), and receives significant rainfall, particularly during the wet season from November to April.

Among the city's notable landmarks is the Clock Tower Monument, erected in memory of Samoans who died in World War I. The historic Immaculate Conception Cathedral, built in 1884, stands as an impressive example of colonial architecture. Mulinu'u Peninsula, the traditional seat of Samoa's government, houses the parliament building and several historical sites.

The Robert Louis Stevenson Museum, located at the author's former estate Villa Vailima, offers visitors insight into the famous writer's life in Samoa. The Apia Park serves as the national stadium and hosts various sporting events, particularly rugby matches, which is the country's most popular sport.

The city's central business district features the bustling Maketi Fou (New Market), where locals sell fresh produce, traditional crafts, and various goods. The waterfront area, known as Beach Road, is lined with government buildings, shops, and restaurants, making it the city's main commercial thoroughfare. Apia's port handles approximately 97% of Samoa's international trade, making it vital to the country's economy.

Apia serves as an important educational center, hosting the National University of Samoa and several other educational institutions. The city also functions as the main gateway for tourists visiting Samoa, with Faleolo International Airport located about 25 miles (40 kilometers) west of the city center.
