About Charlestown

Charlestown is the capital city of Nevis, the smaller island of the two-island nation of Saint Kitts and Nevis. Located on the western coast of Nevis, it serves as the island's primary commercial and administrative center. The city has a population of approximately 1,500 residents.

Founded in the 17th century by the British, Charlestown played a significant role in the Caribbean's colonial history. The city's architecture reflects its British colonial heritage, with many historic buildings constructed from both stone and wood. Charlestown's harbor was once one of the busiest ports in the Colonial Caribbean, serving as a crucial point for trade and commerce.

Among the city's most notable landmarks is the Museum of Nevis History, housed in a restored stone building that marks the birthplace of Alexander Hamilton, one of the Founding Fathers of the United States. The Bath Hotel, constructed in 1778, was once the first luxury hotel in the Caribbean and remains an important historical site. The Charlestown Methodist Church, built in 1802, stands as one of the oldest Methodist churches in the Caribbean.

The city features several other historical attractions, including the Jewish Cemetery, dating back to the 17th century, and the Court House, which houses government offices. The waterfront area, known as Charlestown Pier, serves as a vital point for ferry services between Nevis and St. Kitts.

Today, Charlestown functions as the primary gateway for tourism in Nevis, with its harbor receiving both ferry passengers and cruise ship visitors. The city maintains its historical charm while providing modern amenities and services for both residents and tourists. The surrounding area features beautiful beaches and offers views of the dormant volcano, Nevis Peak, which forms a dramatic backdrop to the city.
