About Kaliningrad
Kaliningrad is the administrative centre of Kaliningrad Oblast, Russia's westernmost region, exclave between Lithuania and Poland on the Baltic Sea. With a population of approximately 489 584 (2024), it's the largest city in the oblast and an important industrial, cultural, and transportation hub.
Originally founded by the Teutonic Knights in 1255 as Königsberg, the city was the capital of East Prussia for centuries. After World War II, it was transferred to the Soviet Union and renamed Kaliningrad in 1946 in honor of Soviet leader Mikhail Kalinin. The city's unique history has left it with a distinctive blend of German, Soviet, and modern Russian architectural styles.
The city is home to several significant landmarks and cultural institutions. The most notable is the Königsberg Cathedral, a 14th-century Gothic church that houses the tomb of philosopher Immanuel Kant. The House of Soviets, an unfinished brutalist building from the 1970s, stands as a prominent symbol of the Soviet era. The city also features the Museum of the World Ocean, which includes several vessels and the research ship "Vityaz" as exhibits.
Kaliningrad's economy is diverse, encompassing shipbuilding, automotive manufacturing, and food processing industries. The region is also famous for amber production, with approximately 90% of the world's amber deposits located in the area. The Kaliningrad Amber Museum, housed in a former defensive tower, showcases this natural resource through various exhibits and collections.
The city hosts the Immanuel Kant Baltic Federal University, one of Russia's major higher education institutions. Kaliningrad was one of the host cities for the 2018 FIFA World Cup, with matches played at the Kaliningrad Stadium. The city's location has made it an important strategic point, hosting the headquarters of the Russian Baltic Fleet.
Despite being physically separated from mainland Russia by Lithuania and Belarus, Kaliningrad maintains strong connections with the rest of the country through air travel and special transit arrangements. The city's unique geographical position and rich historical heritage have made it an interesting destination for tourists interested in European history and culture.
