About Madeira

Madeira is an autonomous region of Portugal, consisting of a main island of the same name and several smaller islands, located in the North Atlantic Ocean, approximately 320 miles west of Morocco. The archipelago's capital and largest city is Funchal, situated on the south coast of the main island. With a population of approximately 251,000 inhabitants, Madeira has become one of Portugal's most prominent tourist destinations, known for its year-round mild climate, dramatic landscapes, and unique cultural heritage.

The archipelago was discovered by Portuguese sailors in 1419 and has since developed into a significant tourist and wine-producing region. The main island features a varied topography, with the highest point being Pico Ruivo at 6,106 feet above sea level. The island's unique system of water channels, known as levadas, extends over 1,350 miles and serves both as an irrigation network and a popular hiking attraction. The Laurisilva Forest, a UNESCO World Heritage site, covers approximately 20% of the island and represents the largest surviving laurel forest in the world.

Notable tourist attractions include the historic Monte Palace Tropical Garden, famous for its extensive collection of exotic plants and traditional toboggan rides, and the Cabo Girão Skywalk, Europe's highest cliff skywalk at 1,902 feet. The island's capital, Funchal, features the historic Sé Cathedral, dating from the 15th century, and the vibrant Mercado dos Lavradores (Farmers' Market). The CR7 Museum, dedicated to football star Cristiano Ronaldo, who was born on the island, attracts sports enthusiasts from around the world.

Madeira is renowned for its luxury resorts and hotels, including the historic Reid's Palace, Savoy Palace, and Belmond Reid's Palace. The island is also famous for its Madeira wine, traditional embroidery, and New Year's Eve fireworks display, which holds a Guinness World Record. The Madeira Airport, known for its unique runway built partly on stilts over the ocean, serves as the main gateway to the island. The region's economy is primarily based on tourism, services, and agriculture, with banana cultivation and flower growing being significant agricultural activities.
