About Lisbon

Lisbon (Lisboa in Portuguese) is the capital and largest city of Portugal, situated on the Atlantic coast in the western part of the Iberian Peninsula. With a population of over 544,851 in the city proper and around 2.8 million in the metropolitan area, it stands as the westernmost capital city in continental Europe.

The city's history spans over 3,000 years, making it one of the oldest cities in Western Europe. Founded by the Phoenicians, Lisbon was subsequently ruled by various civilizations, including the Romans, Visigoths, and Moors, before becoming the capital of Portugal in 1255. The city played a crucial role during the Age of Discovery in the 15th and 16th centuries, serving as the departure point for numerous maritime expeditions that established Portugal's colonial empire.

The cityscape of Lisbon is characterized by its seven hills and distinctive architecture. The devastating earthquake of 1755, followed by a tsunami and fires, destroyed much of the city, leading to its reconstruction in the Pombaline style, named after the Marquis of Pombal. Notable landmarks include the São Jorge Castle, perched atop the highest hill overlooking the historic center; the Belém Tower, a UNESCO World Heritage site and symbol of Portugal's maritime heritage; and the Jerónimos Monastery, an exemplary piece of Manueline architecture. The city's historic tramways, particularly the famous Tram 28, continue to navigate the narrow, winding streets of old neighborhoods like Alfama and Bairro Alto.

Economically, Lisbon serves as Portugal's primary economic hub, hosting major financial institutions, corporations, and media outlets. The city's port remains one of Europe's most significant, while the Parque das Nações district, developed for Expo '98, represents modern Lisbon with its contemporary architecture and commercial spaces. The city is also home to several prestigious universities, including the University of Lisbon, one of the country's largest higher education institutions.

Transportation in Lisbon is facilitated by an extensive public transit system, including buses, metro, trains, and the iconic yellow trams. Humberto Delgado Airport, also known as Lisbon Airport, serves as the main international gateway to Portugal. The Vasco da Gama Bridge, spanning the Tagus River, is Europe's longest bridge at 7.67 miles (12.3 kilometers).

The city experiences a Mediterranean climate with mild winters and warm summers, influenced by its proximity to the Atlantic Ocean. This climate, combined with its rich cultural heritage, historic architecture, and vibrant culinary scene featuring fresh seafood and traditional Portuguese dishes, has made Lisbon an increasingly popular tourist destination. The city regularly ranks among Europe's most visited capitals and has received numerous awards for tourism excellence.
