About Guimarães
Guimarães is a historic city located in northern Portugal, in the district of Braga. Often referred to as the "Cradle of Portugal," it holds significant importance in Portuguese history as the country's first capital and the birthplace of Afonso Henriques, Portugal's first king. The city's historic center was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2001, recognizing its exceptional preservation of medieval urban development from the 15th to 19th centuries.
The city's most prominent landmark is the Guimarães Castle, constructed in the 10th century to protect the monastery from attacks by Moors and Norsemen. Adjacent to the castle stands the Palace of the Dukes of Braganza, a 15th-century medieval estate that now serves as a museum. The palace showcases period furniture, weapons, and decorative arts that reflect the Portuguese aristocracy's lifestyle during the Middle Ages.

At the heart of the old town lies Oliveira Square, surrounded by medieval buildings and featuring the Nossa Senhora da Oliveira Church, which dates back to the 12th century. The square also contains the Padrão do Salado, a Gothic shrine erected in 1342. The city's historic center features well-preserved examples of traditional Portuguese architecture, including medieval arcades, ornate balconies, and granite facades.
Modern Guimarães has developed into a significant industrial center, particularly in textiles and footwear manufacturing. The city is home to the University of Minho, established in 1973, which has contributed to its cultural and economic development. In 2012, Guimarães served as the European Capital of Culture, hosting numerous cultural events and exhibitions throughout the year. The city maintains a population of approximately 160,000 inhabitants in its metropolitan area and continues to be an important tourist destination, attracting visitors interested in Portuguese history and medieval architecture.
