Founded by the Romans over 2,000 years ago as "Bracara Augusta," the city has a rich historical heritage. During the Roman period, it was an important administrative and commercial center. After the fall of the Roman Empire, Braga became the capital of the Suebi Kingdom in the 5th century. Throughout history, the city has maintained its significance as a religious center, earning the nickname "Portuguese Rome" due to its numerous churches and religious institutions.

The city's most notable landmark is the Bom Jesus do Monte Sanctuary, a UNESCO World Heritage site featuring a magnificent baroque stairway with 577 steps. The Braga Cathedral, built in the 12th century, stands as Portugal's oldest cathedral and represents various architectural styles, including Romanesque, Gothic, Baroque, and Manueline. Other significant religious sites include the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Sameiro and the Santa Barbara Garden.
Braga is also known for its vibrant cultural scene and educational institutions. The University of Minho, established in 1973, is one of Portugal's leading universities and contributes significantly to the city's young and dynamic atmosphere. The city center features well-preserved medieval streets, elegant squares, and numerous cafes and restaurants serving traditional Minho cuisine.
The local economy is diverse, with strong sectors in services, technology, and retail. The city hosts several technology companies and research centers, particularly in the fields of nanotechnology and information systems. Braga's Industrial Park is one of the largest in Northern Portugal. The city is well-connected to other major Portuguese cities through its railway system and proximity to Porto's Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport, located approximately 50 kilometers away.
