About Aveiro

Aveiro is a city in Portugal, located in the Centro Region, approximately 45 miles south of Porto. The municipality has a population of around 80,000 inhabitants. The city is often called "Portuguese Venice" due to its system of canals and traditional boats called "moliceiros."

The city's history dates back to Roman times, but it gained significance in the 16th century as a major port for maritime trade and salt production. However, in 1575, a severe storm closed the harbor entrance, leading to economic decline until the artificial channel was created in the 19th century, reconnecting Aveiro to the sea.

The most notable architectural landmark is the Aveiro Cathedral, originally built in the 15th century. The city is also famous for its Art Nouveau buildings, particularly along the main canal, with the Museum of Art Nouveau housed in the stunning Casa Major Pessoa. The São Gonçalinho Chapel, built in the 18th century, hosts a unique annual festival where participants throw sweet bread from the chapel's dome.

Aveiro is home to the University of Aveiro, established in 1973, which has become one of Portugal's leading educational institutions, particularly in engineering and technology fields. The university's modern campus architecture has won several awards and attracts students from around the world.

The city is renowned for its traditional sweets, particularly "ovos moles," egg-based confections originally created by nuns in the local convents. The surrounding Ria de Aveiro lagoon system is an important ecological area, supporting diverse wildlife and traditional salt production. The region's salt pans, some still active today, have been operating since the Roman period and remain an important part of the local heritage and tourism industry.
