Originally a small fishing village, Albufeira's history dates back to Roman times when it was called "Baltum." The Arabs later named it "Al-buhera," meaning "castle-on-the-sea," from which the current name derives. The city remained under Moorish rule until 1249 when it was conquered by King Afonso III during the Christian Reconquista.

The city's economy is primarily based on tourism and related services. Albufeira features numerous beaches, including the popular Praia dos Pescadores (Fishermen's Beach) and Praia do Túnel (Tunnel Beach). The city's historic center, known as Old Town (Cidade Velha), maintains its traditional Portuguese character with narrow cobblestone streets, whitewashed buildings, and the 18th-century Igreja Matriz church.

Albufeira's marina, constructed in 2003, is a modern facility capable of accommodating 475 boats. The marina area is distinguished by its colorful apartments and various restaurants, creating a striking contrast with the traditional architecture of the old town. Notable landmarks include the Clock Tower (Torre do Relógio), a remnant of the old castle, and the Municipal Archaeological Museum, which houses artifacts from the region's Roman and Moorish periods.

The city experiences a Mediterranean climate with mild winters and warm, dry summers. Average temperatures range from 52°F (11°C) in winter to 75°F (24°C) in summer. The region receives approximately 3,000 hours of sunshine annually, making it a popular year-round destination for visitors from Northern Europe and other parts of the world.
