Cities of Panama

Panama consists of several significant urban centers that play vital roles in the country's economic and cultural landscape. Panamá City, the capital and largest metropolis, houses approximately 1.5 million people in its metropolitan area, serving as the country's primary financial and cultural hub. The city features a striking skyline of modern high-rises alongside historic colonial architecture.

The Caribbean port city of Colón, Panama's second-largest urban center, has around 250,000 inhabitants and hosts the Colón Free Trade Zone, the largest free port in the Americas. David, the third most populous city with about 150,000 residents, serves as the capital of Chiriquí Province and functions as a crucial agricultural and commercial center in the western region.

Other notable cities include Santiago, the commercial heart of Veraguas Province; La Chorrera, a rapidly growing suburban city near the capital; and Chitré, the cultural center of the Azuero Peninsula. Penonomé, the capital of Coclé Province, is known for its handicraft production and cultural festivals. Most Panamanian cities are experiencing significant growth due to urbanization, with many developing modern infrastructure while preserving their historical heritage. These urban centers are primarily connected by the Pan-American Highway, which serves as the country's main transportation artery.
