About Ramallah

Ramallah is a Palestinian city located in the central West Bank, situated 10 kilometers north of Jerusalem. Serving as the de facto administrative capital of the Palestinian National Authority, it has emerged as a significant political, cultural, and economic hub in the Palestinian territories. The city sits at an elevation of 872 meters (2,861 feet) above sea level, making it one of the highest cities in the region.

The city's history dates back to the mid-16th century when it was founded by the Haddadins, a Christian family from east Jordan. Initially a small village, Ramallah grew significantly during the British Mandate period (1920-1948) and continued to develop after coming under Jordanian rule in 1948. Following the 1967 Six-Day War, the city came under Israeli occupation. After the 1993 Oslo Accords, Ramallah became the primary base of the Palestinian Authority, hosting most governmental institutions.

Today, Ramallah has a population of approximately 44,000 in the city proper, while the greater metropolitan area, including the adjacent city of Al-Bireh, has a population exceeding 362,000. The city is known for its relatively liberal and cosmopolitan atmosphere, with a significant Christian minority living alongside a Muslim majority. The city hosts numerous international organizations, diplomatic missions, and NGOs, contributing to its diverse demographic makeup.

Notable landmarks in Ramallah include Arafat's Tomb, which houses the remains of former Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat, the Mukataa (the presidential compound), and the Ramallah Cultural Palace. The city's modern downtown area features the Al-Manara Square, the central gathering point marked by its distinctive lion statues. The Old City of Ramallah preserves traditional Palestinian architecture and includes historic buildings such as the Friends Boys School, established in 1901, and the Al-Khayyat Building.

Ramallah serves as a major economic center, hosting numerous banks, businesses, and cultural institutions. The city is home to several universities, including Birzeit University in its metropolitan area, one of the oldest and most prestigious Palestinian educational institutions. The city's infrastructure includes modern shopping centers, restaurants, cafes, and entertainment venues, making it a hub for social and cultural activities in the West Bank.
