About Oman

Oman, officially the Sultanate of Oman, occupies the southeastern coast of the Arabian Peninsula. The country covers an area of 119,500 square miles (309,500 square kilometers) and shares borders with the United Arab Emirates to the northwest, Saudi Arabia to the west, and Yemen to the southwest. The coastline extends 1,700 miles (2,735 kilometers) along the Arabian Sea, Gulf of Oman, and the Persian Gulf.

The capital and largest city, Muscat, serves as the country's primary commercial and financial center. Other major cities include Salalah, Sohar, and Nizwa. The population of Oman reached 5.4 million in 2023, with approximately 40% being expatriates. The official language is Arabic, while English is widely used in business and commerce.

Oman's economy relies heavily on oil and natural gas exports, which account for about 68% of government revenue. The country has implemented economic diversification strategies focusing on tourism, manufacturing, logistics, and technology sectors. The Port of Sohar and the Port of Salalah rank among the region's most significant maritime trade facilities.

The country's geography features diverse landscapes, including the Al Hajar Mountains in the north, reaching heights of up to 9,872 feet (3,009 meters) at Jebel Shams, extensive deserts like the Rub' al Khali (Empty Quarter), and fertile coastal plains. The southern region of Dhofar experiences a unique monsoon season locally known as Khareef.

Tourism has emerged as a crucial sector of Oman's economy, with the country attracting visitors through its combination of modern infrastructure and preserved historical sites. Major attractions include the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque in Muscat, the ancient capital of Nizwa with its 17th-century fort, the UNESCO World Heritage site of Bahla Fort, and the pristine beaches of Musandam. The country's well-preserved wadis (valleys), such as Wadi Shab and Wadi Bani Khalid, draw nature enthusiasts and adventure tourists.

Oman maintains a sophisticated network of modern highways connecting major cities, four international airports, and multiple seaports. The country's healthcare and education systems rank among the most advanced in the Middle East, with numerous public and private institutions serving the population. The government has invested substantially in renewable energy projects, aiming to generate 30% of its electricity from renewable sources by 2030.
