About Oslo
Oslo is the capital and most populous city of Norway, situated at the head of the Oslo Fjord in the country's southeastern region. As of 2023, the city has a population of approximately 700,000 residents in its municipality, while the greater metropolitan area houses about 1.6 million people. Oslo serves as the political, economic, and cultural center of Norway, contributing nearly a quarter of the country's GDP.

The city's history dates back to around 1000 CE, when it was founded by King Harald Hardrada. The original settlement was destroyed by fire in 1624, after which King Christian IV of Denmark-Norway ordered its relocation and renamed it Christiania. The city retained this name until 1925 when it was officially changed back to Oslo. Throughout its history, Oslo has evolved from a medieval trading port to a modern global city, experiencing significant growth particularly after becoming Norway's capital in 1814.

The city boasts numerous cultural institutions and attractions. The Oslo Opera House, completed in 2007, stands as an architectural masterpiece with its distinctive sloped roof that visitors can walk upon. The Munch Museum, dedicated to the works of famous Norwegian artist Edvard Munch, houses the world's largest collection of his artworks, including "The Scream." The Viking Ship Museum and the Norwegian Folk Museum offer insights into Norway's rich historical heritage. The Vigeland Sculpture Park, featuring over 200 bronze and granite sculptures by Gustav Vigeland, is the world's largest sculpture park created by a single artist.

Oslo's commitment to environmental sustainability has earned it recognition as one of the world's greenest cities. The city was named European Green Capital for 2019 by the European Commission. About two-thirds of the municipality consists of protected areas, forests, and waterways. The city has implemented extensive bicycle infrastructure, electric vehicle initiatives, and aims to become carbon neutral by 2050.
The city's economy is diverse and robust, with strong sectors in maritime industries, technology, and renewable energy. Oslo hosts the Oslo Stock Exchange and serves as headquarters for many of Norway's largest companies. The city consistently ranks among the world's most expensive cities but also maintains one of the highest standards of living globally. Education plays a vital role in the city's development, with the University of Oslo, established in 1811, being Norway's oldest and largest public university.
Transportation in Oslo is highly developed, with an extensive public transit system including buses, trams, metros, ferries, and trains. The Oslo Central Station serves as the main railway hub, connecting the city to other major Norwegian cities and international destinations. The Oslo Airport, Gardermoen, located about 35 kilometers north of the city center, is the main international gateway to Norway.
