About Oslo Metro
The Oslo Metro (Norwegian: Oslo T-bane) is a rapid transit system serving Oslo, Norway, and parts of neighboring Viken county. It is the oldest metro system in Scandinavia, with the first line opening in 1898 as a tram line and later converted to metro standards.
The system consists of six lines numbered 1-5 and 6, covering 85 kilometers of track and serving 101 stations. All lines run through the Common Tunnel (Fellestunnelen) in the city center, which opened in 1966. Five of the six lines converge in the east at Tøyen station, making it one of the network's major transfer points.
Oslo Metro operates with a uniform fleet of MX3000 trains manufactured by Siemens. These three-car units, introduced between 2006 and 2014, feature a distinctive red and white livery and can reach speeds up to 70 kilometers per hour. During peak hours, trains run every 15 minutes on each line, with more frequent service in the common central section where lines overlap.
The system is operated by Sporveien T-banen on behalf of Ruter, the public transport authority for Oslo and Viken. In 2019, the Oslo Metro carried approximately 118 million passengers, making it one of Norway's busiest public transport systems. The network uses a 750V DC third rail power supply system and standard gauge tracks.
Recent developments include the opening of the Løren station in 2016 and ongoing construction of the Fornebu Line, scheduled for completion in 2027. The metro system plays a crucial role in Oslo's strategy to reduce car traffic and achieve its environmental goals.
