About Wellington Zoo

The Wellington Zoo, established in 1906, is New Zealand's first zoo and the country's oldest conservation organization. Located in Newtown, Wellington, it occupies 13-hectares (32-acres) of land and is home to over 500 animals representing approximately 100 different species.

The zoo features several specialized habitats and exhibits. Some of the most notable areas include the Asia Precinct, housing sun bears and tigers, the African Unity exhibit featuring lions and meerkats, and Meet the Locals He Tuku Aroha, which showcases New Zealand's native wildlife. The zoo also maintains a significant population of endangered species, including red pandas, lions, and chimpanzees.

Conservation and education are central to the zoo's mission. The facility operates the The Nest Te Kōhanga, a state-of-the-art veterinary hospital that provides care for both zoo animals and injured native wildlife. This center allows visitors to observe veterinary procedures through viewing windows, offering unique educational opportunities.

The zoo participates in several international breeding programs and has achieved notable success in breeding endangered species. It is accredited by the Zoo and Aquarium Association (ZAA) and maintains partnerships with various conservation organizations worldwide. In recent years, the zoo has implemented numerous sustainability initiatives, including waste reduction programs and the installation of solar panels, as part of its commitment to environmental conservation.
