About Christchurch Airport
Christchurch Airport (CHC), officially known as Christchurch International Airport, is the second-busiest airport in New Zealand after Auckland Airport. Located approximately 12 kilometers northwest of the city center, it serves as the major gateway to the South Island.
The airport began operations in 1940 as a military air base during World War II and became New Zealand's first international airport in 1950. Today, it features a single integrated terminal handling both domestic and international flights, covering an area of 750 hectares. The terminal building, extensively renovated in 2013, encompasses approximately 77,000 square meters.
Christchurch Airport operates 24 hours a day and serves as a base for the New Zealand Antarctic Program, functioning as one of only five gateway cities to Antarctica worldwide. The facility handles around 6.5 million passengers annually and is served by multiple international carriers connecting to destinations across Asia, Australia, and the Pacific.
The airport's infrastructure includes three runways: the main runway (02/20) at 3,288 meters in length, making it the longest in New Zealand; a parallel grass runway; and a crosswind runway. It features advanced navigation systems allowing for operations in low visibility conditions and has been recognized for its environmental initiatives, including a significant solar energy installation and electric vehicle charging stations. The airport also maintains a significant cargo operation, processing over 30,000 tonnes of freight annually.
