About Hauraki Gulf

The Hauraki Gulf is a coastal feature of the North Island of New Zealand, covering an area of 4,000 square kilometers (1,500 square miles). This significant body of water lies between Auckland, the Coromandel Peninsula, and Great Barrier Island, forming part of the Pacific Ocean.

The gulf contains numerous islands, including Rangitoto Island, Auckland's youngest volcano, Waiheke Island, known for its vineyards and beaches, and Great Barrier Island (Aotea). The area is protected as the Hauraki Gulf Marine Park, established in 2000, which encompasses more than 50 islands and six marine reserves. The gulf serves as a crucial habitat for various marine species, including whales, dolphins, and diverse fish populations.

Historically, the Hauraki Gulf has been significant for both Māori and European settlers, serving as a major transportation route and source of food. Today, it remains an important commercial shipping lane, with the Ports of Auckland handling approximately 60% of New Zealand's imports.

The gulf's ecosystem supports significant biodiversity, including 25% of the world's marine mammal species. Several endangered species, such as the Bryde's whale and the New Zealand fairy tern, make their home in these waters. The region is also popular for recreational activities including sailing, fishing, and island hopping, contributing significantly to Auckland's tourism industry.
